PanDASAL, (a Food of Soul)

Everyone has their own stories and experiences in life. Many may be happy while others not. Many may feel blessed while others feel ill-fated. Many may have success while others have failures. The story of life has different settings, moods, climax and endings. But while finding the various angles and plots of it, there you will see that there is one thing in common-that is life.

Everyone has a life to live. Life is like a child to feed in order to grow; in order to nourish; and in order to fill in the purpose of its existence. A child, in order to grow, nourish and served its purpose must be fed with something not only needed by the physical body but of its spiritual facet—that is prayer. Aquinas, the Angelic Doctor, stated that it is due to the soul that the body is capable of having life. And thus man must feed his soul with prayers.

God, the Almighty, invites us to reclaim and experience birthright through prayer. It is simple conversation with Him, a very simple way on reaching him. Through prayers we know how to fully commit ourselves to Him. This is done in various ways. Some prays in silence, stillness, and the use of sacred name and scriptures. God yearns to speak with us in the silence. Praying comes in various ways but it boils out in one common purpose, to help us hear the whisper of God. In life, man can be so busy talking and doing his daily tasks and he fails to listen to the still small voice. Without stillness and quiet, we fail to hear the Whisper.

When God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, He wanted man to learn that even His Son, who seats beside Him, also prays. Christ is a perfect contemplative in prayer. Everyone should remember that Christ did not teach His disciples to preach, but he taught them how to pray. One important scenario in Christ’s journey to human salvation is the emotional and symbolic scenes in the garden of Gethsemane which contributed a powerful influence on Christians of all ages. This merely reminds man that even Christ recognizes the power of prayer; its mightiness in feeding oneself and in nourishing one’s soul.

God knows what man’s wants and needs even before praying. The All-Knowing God knows everything; and He even inscribed plans in our lives. If this is so, one may ask; why there is a need for a prayer? It is because through prayers, we learn how to trust, to have faith and to continue. Prayer empowers, heals and changes one’s perspective in life. It may turn negative views to positive. It guides and helps man as he continues his journey in life. It is also the most effective means in strengthening our bond with God.

Prayer has to do with the entire man. One must fully understand the real concept of praying and how it greatly affects human life and dispositions. Prayer, like any other thing that exists has its purpose.

It is the origin of trust, faith and love. In one story of life, a man who has experienced betrayal and lost finds no reason to continue. The evil of human greediness and the evil of the society had taught him to gain hatred in his heart. He almost experienced death while alive. Yet, the cruelness and the bitterness of his experiences didn’t teach him to stop even though he reached the agony of sorrow. The only secret he had was prayer. Through prayer he learned how to trust again; to commit to his faith, and to live life with love. Through prayers, he finds the reflection of God and hears His voice. As what Mother Theresa said, ‘My secret is simple. I pray”

Many would have questioned the significance of praying. Praying isn’t only done by religious persons and one must not have false understanding that praying is only done by those devouts. Everyone must realize that prayer is not just any ritual done but it is a food that nourishes one’s soul that revitalizes the existence of man. Prayer is soul food.

There could never be other food as powerful as prayer. Like the bread that feeds the human body, a prayer feeds the human soul; nourishes and makes it glow. If man would only live with God, he will find a bountiful table of food that will feed his soul.
